Venturer Scout Company

Venturing is designed for youth between the ages of 14 and 17 years old. Venturers widen their horizons in fields of special interest, working with resource persons who give technical assistance. Badge work is available for those youth who are interested and the Venturer motto of “Challenge” embodies much of how these youth approach their goals. Venturing adds elements of committee type organization with the sharing of adult responsibilities in planning their activities. Weekly dues: to be decided by the youth.

TIME: 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursdays

PLACE: TBA (but usually in Belmont Park)

MONTHLY DUES: $5.00 per member

ATTENDANCE: Should your youth not be able to attend a meeting/function/camp or expect to be late, he/she should contact the Company President. Responsibility to his/her group is one of the skills that your child will be learning in Venturers.

UNIFORMS: Regulation uniform must be worn at all formal events. Regulation uniform may be purchased at Scout House. Your youth will receive his/her necker and woggle at the time of their investiture into Scouting. The shirt and necker need not be worn to and from all casual events such as camps and hikes.

EXPECTED CODE OF BEHAVIOUR AND DISCIPLINE: Venturers is a place of high energy and, as such, we expect a lot of noise and activity. However, aggressive, disruptive and/or destructive behaviour towards the leaders, other youth, and/or property will not be tolerated. Discipline, as covered in the leaders’ training is normally set by the youth of the Company. A youth may lose out on a game, an outing or an activity for negative behaviour that is not corrected after warnings have been given. If necessary, the parent may be called in to deal with an unresponsive youth. If you, as a parent, have any concerns regarding discipline or conduct, please discuss this with your youth, the Venturer Advisors or notify the Group Commissioner.

FUNDRAISING: As you are aware, fundraising is a necessary part of all self-funded organizations. Venturers are expected to participate in ALL fundraisers throughout the year unless excused by special permission of the Company President or Venturer Advisor. Venturers occasionally have their own fundraising projects to help offset the costs of special camps or jamborees. It is important that the youth be aware of the reason for a fundraiser as the public often asks the youths. Check with your leader if you are not sure. It is also important that you, as parents, review with your child appropriate manners while in public. Remember that while in uniform, the youth represents all of Scouting.

INFORMATION: Information will come to you from four main sources:

  1. Venturer youth are expected to plan their own activities and be responsible for informing their parents.
  2. The Company may provide you with occasional newsletters concerning upcoming events and activities.
  3. Youth Coordinators may call with information about Venturer events such as camps and other activities.
  4. Parents may call concerning upcoming events that involve all of 7th Juan de Fuca.

CAMPS: At the Venturer level, there is a more extensive camping program than at younger levels. Unless otherwise notified there will be a fee for all camps to cover the cost of camp fuel and equipment maintenance and repair. It is the responsibility of the Company to make their own menu, buy their food and arrange their transportation to and from each camp. At this level, the Advisors do not assume these responsibilities, although they supervise and guide the process.
